My Secret Decorating Tip (And My Blue Glass Lamp is in a New Place!)

Buying new items in-store or online can definitely be fun (especially when you’re excited to decorate the fall or make your home more comfortable for the winter!) but I think rearranging what you already have can be just as (if not more) rewarding. Do you agree?

If you’re new to decorating, I’m glad you’re here to learn. Today I’m going to tell you my favorite decoration tip… a secret decorating strategy you can always ask (and I’ll talk a little bit about why I moved my blue light to this room!).

Of course, if you’re an experienced decorator, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. And if you’ve followed me for so many years, you’ve seen me decorate this way over and over again! It works and it’s also fun. You have seen me decorate this way from time to time, through makeovers in different rooms, houses, in all seasons.

When you’re new to decorating, you might wonder (as I did years ago) if you have to buy things all the time to love your home. Have you ever wondered how some people’s styles can look so eclectic and unique, while some look almost identical to others you’ve seen?

Or maybe you’re wondering if people should redecorate to keep up with certain trends. You may have noticed how several people seem to come together in a room in a hurry without buying anything new. Maybe you (as I did!) wonder how others can afford all that new furniture or decoration.

It may seem like everything is a mystery, or it can simply be an endless cycle of spending a lot of money needed to decorate or stay stylish.

Sometimes people can spend a lot of money on all new furniture or seasonal decorations. That’s right. That’s one way to do it! But those of you who have collected your furniture or accessories from time to time know the secrets of my style. Once you go in this direction, it will not only save you money, but give you a more unique and collected look that can stand the test of time. This secret offers you the opportunity to refresh your home every season without spending a lot of money.

My secret decorating tip (and my blue glass lamp is in a new place!)

My secret decorating tip is to pick up the pieces you like over time. When you decorate this way, it’s fun to upgrade the room even without buying new things because YOU LOVE WHAT YOU HAVE. When you choose wisely to start, your appearance is not outdated. You can go shopping in your own home and quite often you will find the right part to finish the space or decorate for the new season.

And when you don’t have what you need but have the funds to add to your collection or find something special enough to buy, you can do it too! Every time you add a new job (or some) to what you’ve accumulated over the years, you get a new, updated look and can quickly stitch your home together in any season.

This is exactly what I have done in our new home, as I have done repeatedly in every house we live in. Sure, you could buy a new accessory, rug, or even furniture if the budget allows and the right items are found. But I also like it when I don’t have to buy something new. I enjoy mixing and matching and rearranging what I have until the room feels good to me.

If I find something somewhere I like (or if what I have doesn’t work well in a new space), then hooray, I really enjoy adding new items.

As you can see, I moved my blue glass lamp here from my office upstairs. I love it upstairs (I honestly like it in every room!), but I want a round light in this corner. I feel like I need a larger round light as part of the statement, but something that doesn’t block the window light.

For a week or two I had a beautiful tiffany-style lamp sitting there that we’ve had for decades (and it seems to be back in popularity!). We loved it, but after staying with him in that place for a while, I decided I wanted to be better in another corner. (Even if you’re an experienced decorator, decorating often involves moving things around until you like them where they are!) So I went to buy something in my house that worked.

It turned out that the blue glass lamp was the right one! It’s heavy enough to fill some of the space there, but airy enough to allow light and color from the exterior windows to flow through the glass. I missed this lamp above, but I only have one, so this place is a priority!

I bought that lamp that sold a few years ago for my last living room because it felt like ME. Remember the blue glass lamp I made myself? I feel that the blue glass lamp will always work somewhere in my house. Around the same time that the blue lights were added, I bought these blue carpets and now here they are, paired again.

Buying new things over time expands your options and updates your current look. Matching the things you’ve collected over time, or with any new items you choose to get, is what creates your unique STYLE!
